A bamboo flute is a wind instrument made from a bamboo stalk; worldwide there are many types in use, especially in folk music, as can be seen on this list of bamboo flutes. The oldest types of bamboo flutes are played like a flute, that is, the player controls the tone formation itself fully with his lips. Some of these instruments are literally cross played like the North Indian bansuri, other half crosswise, as the kaval from the Balkans, or the ney from Asia Minor. Still others use a sharpened edge and played straight as the shakuhachi in Japan or the kena from South America, which has an incised additional gap to facilitate tone production. The method of play is on more modern instruments sometimes also similar to that of the recorder, the tone is largely automatically formed in the instrument by the construction with the aid of a block (je). The tone of the bamboo flute is always relatively soft, due to the softness and the low weight of the material.
