Apachen is the collective name for the N'de, a multi-division migrant people from southwestern North America, originally from subarctic Canada. They belong to the language family of the Na-dene. The N'de are, like their neighbors, the Dineh, descendants of a Nazi-speaking nomadic people from the McKenzie Basin in Canada. After a period of centuries to migrate southward, these groups eventually settled in the southwest of the present United States. Over the period of arrival, the opinions are divided, but it is clear that in the 15th and 16th centuries there lived a people who called themselves N'de. Apache is an exonymous, derived from a Zuñi word meaning "enemy." N'de is the term she uses for herself, and means as much as "People." The N'de speak the language of the Southern Na-Dene, and in linguistic terms show a number of similarities with the Athabascian speakers from Alaska and western Canada. The present term Apachen is used to distinguish with the related Dineh (Navajo) from Arizona, Utah and Colorado, which exhibit cultural and linguistic similarities. The N'de, historically a tough and strong nomad, had been uninterrupted for centuries with the Spaniards and Mexicans. The first robberies on the Spaniards in Sonora took place in the late 17th century. The US Army experienced after various confrontations that the Apaches were both cruel and inconvenient fighters as skilled streets.
