THE SHAMANENDRUM The shaman drums in our shop are handmade. Making a shaman's drum takes about 20 hours of loving and hard work, spread over 3 to 6 weeks to give the whole process enough time. Each shaman drum is a unique, one-off item, both in sound and appearance. The drum heads are made of skin (rawhide). Because skin reacts to heat and (air) moisture, the tension of the skin can change and with it the pitch/sound. If there is a lot of moisture in the air, the sound may temporarily disappear from your drum. When it freezes, your drumhead can be super tight. When you choose a pinned sheet you will have to work with the elements. If you opt for a tensionable drum head, it is much easier to determine the sound of your drum. Single-sided shaman drums: These shaman hand drums are easy to handle; you carry them in your hand via the handle at the back. A hand drum is very nice to use during (trance) dance and meditations. Traditional, fixed shaman drum In these hand drums, the skin is directly stretched with strips of skin. You can therefore only change the tension of the sheet by gently heating the sheet, for example with a hair dryer, or by moistening it with a damp cloth or your own saliva. Adjustable shaman drum The adjustable hand drum is particularly suitable for thinner skins. The tension of the sheet can be easily adjusted to changing weather conditions with the help of slides. This makes these hand drums ideal in our climate. The sheet is clamped between two iron rings, which are stretched with (plastic) rope. Very suitable for thicker sheets. The iron makes the drum heavier of course. This shaman drum has a skin on both sides that is different in pitch, so that you can make contact with the upper world on the one hand and the underworld on the other. Because an enclosed space is created, the resonance increases, which makes shaman drums produce a characteristic, powerful and full sound. Very suitable for group use. Here too you can choose from a traditional tensioned drum and a tensionable drum. A very large shaman drum, the pow wow is also possible. Your heart's desire for a shaman drum, then consider what's right for you: Maybe you have a special bond with a specific tree or animal that you want to intertwine with your drum? Do you enjoy working with the elements to keep your drum in tune? Do you often play your drum outside or inside? What will you be using your drum for? What shape and size feels right for you? And what sound do you hear? What else is important to you? good to know... that is: the sound box, or frame, is usually made of a solid plank that is bent into an oval or round shape. Beech, oak, ash, maple and elm are the woods I prefer to work with. Birch plywood or a hollow tree trunk is used for the tensionable two-sided drums. Animal skin is used as a drumhead. Goat, horse and deer are almost always available. Another sheet if possible. The sound is also determined by the thickness of the skin, the type of skin chosen, the type of wood used, the size of the drum and whether there is still hair on the skin. For example, a thick head is more likely to produce a firm, massive sound, while a thin head produces a refined and longer lasting, lilting sound. A larger drum offers more different sounds, simply because the 'playing field' is larger. A hairy drum sounds deeper, but also less clear. The size of the drums generally varies in diameter.
