This book is about the development of our understanding of color throughout history, from antiquity to the present, from Aristotle to Albers. In addition to a historical overview, it includes thematic essays that explore the use of color in various disciplines and sectors: religion, commerce, language, nature, well-being, food, printmaking, and music. Many illustrations come from the famous Colour Reference Library of the Royal College of Art, which includes six centuries and nearly two thousand titles, from a Gothic manuscript on the composition of the rainbow to hand-painted works from the Enlightenment on color theory and twentieth-century color charts.
