A sitar is a string instrument from India with a very characteristic sound. The instrument has besides four melody strings and two rhythm strings (chikari), even twelve to fourteen resonance strings (tarafs). The resonance strings are tuned in the key of the respective raga. The sitar traditionally comes from the Hindustani music. The instrument was in the sixties prominence in the West by The Beatles and other rock bands instrument used several times in their songs. The most famous sitar player Ravi Shankar was in the world. He played at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Among other things, this music of India was in general and sitar music in particular to the general public. Ravi Shankar died on December 11, 2012.
