More information

Sponge animals (Porifera; a contraction of the Latin words porus, pore, and ferre, bear) form a tribe of the animal kingdom. They are sessile, primitive multicellular animals that live in the water and attach themselves to the bottom. Most live in seas and oceans, up to 8.5 kilometers deep, but there are also freshwater sponges. They catch their food by filtering water. There is some differentiation in the cells, but not separate organs, muscles or nerves. In the year 2013 more than 8400 species are known, and new species are regularly described. Sponges are among the oldest known animals. Fossils date from the Precambrium. Sponge animals have a simple construction. They consist of a tube, one end of which is fixed to the bottom. The upper end of the tube is open and is called osculum. Inside is a cavity, the spongocoel. The tube has a skeleton, usually made up of so-called skeletal needles (spicula). Water is drawn in through the wall of the tube, which leaves the tube via the top (the osculum). Sponge animals are usually hermaphrodite (bisexual), or are alternately male and female. In some species there are permanent male and female individuals.
