Shri Lakshmi, sometimes also Mahalaxmi (Sanskrit: लक्ष्मी lakṣmī) is the Hindu goddess of light, wealth and happiness, as well as beauty, courage, fertility and love. She is considered the mother of the universe in Hinduism and is honored during the annual festival of lights, Diwali. Other names of Lakshmi are: Haripriya (beloved of Hari), Padma (lotus), Padmalaya (residing on a lotus), Jaladhija (born of the ocean), Chanchala (fickle), Karisin (rich in dung, like fertilehLakshmi, with her slender waist and full breasts, is seen as the feminine ideal of beauty. She resides in the sweetly scented flower wreaths that can be obtained in the temples and bestows the wearer with luck and prosperity. Sometimes she is described as 'changeable or capricious', because luck can disappear as quickly as it came. She is mainly associated with Padma (the lotus), the symbol of fertility. She is often depicted sitting or standing on a lotus, with or without Vishnu. She is usually depicted with golden skin In one popular image, Vishnu rests on the serpent Ananta and Laksmi massages her lord's feet with ointment.
