Batik (from: many dots in Javanese) is a way to decorate a woven fabric with paint. Clothed fabrics are usually processed into clothing, but can also be used in the interior, for book bindings or wall hangings. Batikken is a very old art form. Substances were found in the Middle East, in India and Central Asia more than 2000 years ago. To batik the fabric is first partially painted with wax. The treated parts can not absorb paint. The wax is removed after dyeing. Advanced batik consists of different color courses, whereby the paints are (partly) removed or re-applied by the wax. Because there are small cracks in the laundry, there is often a kind of crackle effect. The batik was and is mainly done in Indonesia, especially in Java. There are considerable regional differences in the batik patterns. Since 2009, batik has been mentioned on the List of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
