Batik (from: many dots in Javanese) is a way of decorating a woven fabric with paint. Batiked fabrics are usually processed into clothing, but can also be used in the interior, for book bindings or wall hangings. Batik is a very old art form. Substances have been found in the Middle East, in India and Central Asia from more than 2,000 years ago. To batik, the fabric is first partially painted with wax. The treated parts cannot absorb paint. After dyeing, the wax is removed. Advanced batik consists of different color courses, in which the wax is (partly) removed or reapplied between the dye baths. Because small cracks appear in the wax, a kind of crackle effect often occurs. Typical images on Indo-European batik sarongs are bouquets, illustrations from European fairy tales and illustrations from European wallpaper. The Indo-European women were the first to produce batiks on an industrial scale, promoting the spread of batik to other areas and the first to develop modern batik styles.
