Binoculars (or simply viewer) is an optical instrument objects at great distances enlarged display. The instrument was invented in 1608 by Dutchman Hans Lippershey from Middelburg. The present binoculars are usually double (binocular) is performed and then consists of two identical telescopes with low magnification. Both halves viewer contain a lens and an eyepiece and have a system of prisms to turn the image upright (an astronomical telescope without these prisms gives an inverted image). A pair of binoculars is also called prism binoculars. With the prisms a shortening of the binoculars is also accomplished by the collapsing of the beam path. The viewer had invented by Lippershey, other than the present-day viewer, a negative lens and eyepiece. That gives without prisms needed an upright image, but the angle is small and a large magnification is not feasible. This type is also called Dutch telescope. The so-called theater viewers will sometimes still use this system. There are used two types of prism arrays. The roof prism (also called penta prisms) are identified by the right main beam path (lenses and eyepieces are right behind each other), porro give a parallel shift in the beam path, as seen in the picture are the objectives and eyepieces to each other shifted.
