More information

Seagulls are seabirds from the Laridae family and the order is stalked migrants (Charadriiformes). 102 species have been named. They are generally medium to fairly large birds, mostly gray or white, often with black head and beak drawings. They have a typical shrill, screaming call. The beak is firm and quite long, the legs have webbed feet. The "real" gulls vary in size from the little gull (120 g and 29 cm) to the great black-backed gull (1.75 kg and 76 cm). The terns are also considered to belong to this family according to the IOC World Bird List and form a subfamily or a sex group there. Very often the terns are still presented as their own family (the Sternidae). On average, terns are slimmer and smaller, with a slender, pointed beak. However, the giant tern is larger than many small species of "real" seagulls. The little tern is smaller than the smallest gull.
