More information

Eagles are diurnal, medium to large birds of prey usually with wide wings, strong beak and sharp claws (nails). Eagles were and are widely used as a symbol by countries and organizations, because they radiate power, beauty and independence. The raptors are shown in Dutch with the word "eagle" all belong to the order of the Accipitriformes but not to the same family or gender and kinship relations are not always clear. The vast majority eagles belong to the family Accipitridae (hawk family). The osprey belongs to the family Pandionidae (Ospreys). Like all raptors eagles have a large, powerful hooked beak to tear flesh from prey. In addition, strong legs and powerful claws. They also have excellent eyesight. The plumage of male and female is similar, but the female is usually larger. They get their adult plumage after a few years. Eagles are mainly in Europe, Asia and Africa. Perhaps one of the most famous eagles, the bald eagle, lives in North America. In the Netherlands and Belgium are the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) (breeding bird in the Netherlands), the osprey (Pandion haliaetus) (by tractor in both countries), the serpent eagle (Circaetus gallicus) (summer guest in the Netherlands, including in the Fochteloërveen, vagrant in Belgium) and the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) (vagrant in Belgium). The Ptolemaic rulers of Egypt used the eagle on their seal, while the Romans used the bird on the standards of their legion. The United States were to adopt the North American "Bald Eagle" as a prominent part of their great seal. The Mexican flag is depicted an eagle on a cactus with a snake in its beak. This is a reference to the founding myth of Tenochtitlan, the precursor to Mexico City. Also include Panama (harpy eagle), Germany, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Romania, Russia and Albania, the eagle high symbolic value. The eagle is the heraldic animal of the German Reich and the Federal Republic. The Dutch heraldic eagle is slightly rarer but the eagle is common as "Frisian eagle" in northern Dutch weapons. The two-headed eagle is both Reich (all from the Holy Roman Empire), the Austrian Empire (and at the time of the first republic in the Balance State) and the Russian Empire. However, the Russians stood on the chest of the eagle depicted a shield with St. George; traditionally the patron of the Czars and the Russian Empire. In Albania is called the eagle Shqiponje, and a name of the Albanian people for their country's Shqiptar, which means the land of the eagle.
