The cow (Bos taurus) is an even-toed from the genus Bos of the family Bovidae (Bovidae). The female animal is referred to as a cow, the male animal is a bull. An ox is a castrated bull. The cow is the domesticated descendant of the extinct species since the Middle Ages, the aurochs Bos primigenius. There are now attempts to breed back the prototype, at least in animals that appearance strongly resemble. One of the best known efforts is that of the brothers Heck, known as Heck cattle.
