In the early morning, listen carefully ... The birdsong is howling and thundering. For us humans, the bird song is something to enjoy. For birds, all that whistle revolves around two things: war and peace. THE FIGHTERS: Why war and peace? The one reason for the birds to sing is to defend its territory from rivals. With much of their whistle, they compete nonviolently with the competition in the spring. They sing: "Pay attention, I am here!" THE DECORATORS: The other reason is about peace, about love. In the spring it starts to itch with the bird men. They drop all their caution and sing full-heartedly. The longer the male sings, the more likely a female will pass by who will take the time to study her potential mate. THE SINGERS: Did you notice that the above is only about the men? Because indeed, only the men sing. Females have no territory to defend and do not need to adorn the males. There is one exception: the robin. Mrs. robin does sing, but only in autumn and winter when she defends her own place as fiercely as the men. THE IMITATORS: Sometimes it is not just singing. Some birds are also brilliant impersonators. For example, starlings mimic the sound of telephones and alarm systems. For example, there are starlings at the Central Station in Rotterdam who imitate the train sounds. But the master impersonator is the lyrebird from Australia. You can't think of it as crazy or this bird can do it. Even clicking a camera is no problem for this bird. British biologist and TV maker David Attenborough filmed the lyre bird's arts.
