Larimar is a mineral, a rare variety of pectolite that is only found in the Dominican Republic, in the Los Chupaderos area in the Sierra de Baoruco mountain range. Larimar can be found in the colours white, light blue, green-blue and dark blue. Pectolite is always white, except in its variation Larimar. In Larimar, the calcium is replaced by cobalt, hence the blue colour, which is also called volcanic blue. Although pectolite can be found in several places on earth, larimar only occurs in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is said to be part of Atlantis, which is why it's called the Atlantis stone. Larimar is named after the daughter of the discoverer of the stone, Miguel Méndez, Larissa, and the Spanish word mar = sea.
