Silicon carbide (SiC), also known as carborundum, is a very hard material that is widely used for grinding and polishing, in the form of grinding stones, polishing and abrasive pads and as a coating of abrasive paper, and nowadays also for armored armored vehicles. The connection was discovered by Edward Goodrich Acheson, who obtained a patent on February 28, 1893. Granular silicon carbide is produced on a commercial scale by a very high temperature reaction. High-grade silica sand and carbon (mostly petroleum coke) are mixed in the correct proportion to reaction material. A lot of material is being built from this mix. In the middle of this hope material there is a core of graphite that serves as a flow conductor. The graphite core is connected to a transformer and put under pressure. As a result of resistance, the temperature rises to about 2700 degrees Celsius in the core of the heap of material (oven). At this temperature the reaction passes SiO 2 (sand) + 3C (coke) yields SiC + 2 CO (carbon monoxide); In short: SiO2 + 3C → SiC + 2 CO A clear distinction must be made between granular silicon carbide and fibrous silicon carbide, which is produced for specific purposes on a nano scale. It has been shown that granular silicon carbide is toxic inert. Granular silicon carbide, as produced in the Netherlands, is not classified as dangerous substance or preparation according to EC Directive 67/548 / EEC or Directive 1999/45 / EC or Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. In a report published on 7 December 2012, the Dutch Health Council proposes that silicon carbide in fiber form ("whiskers") can cause cancer and be classified as "carcinogenic to humans" (in category 1A), according to the Health Council's classification system. Data on the granular form of silicon carbide are insufficient to classify their carcinogenic properties (Category 3). The reason is that the committee is concerned about whether the commercial granular silicon carbide is sufficiently free of fibrous silicon carbide.
