The transparent variety Iolite is often used as a gemstone. The name is derived from the Greek word for violet. Another name is dichroite which means "two-colored stone" in Greek. Iolite is mined in Sri Lanka, Burma, Australia's Northern Territory, Namibia, Brazil, Tanzania and Madagascar, among others. Iolite or Water Sapphire is a spiritual stone and stimulates insight and knowledge.
