Ohm mudra, also called deity gesture, is a mudra in hatha yoga. A mudra (Sanskrit for seal or gesture) is a term that goes back to the classical texts of the Vedas and in this case means that the hand is held in a certain position through which prana is guided in a certain way. Mudras are mainly practiced while meditating. In the ohm mudra, the tips of the thumb and forefinger are touching each other, making an "o" together. Different meanings are attributed to the fingers. The thumb represents the divine energy. It is the symbol for willpower that is not conditioned by karma. The index finger is associated with Jupiter and symbolizes the ego and expansion. The energies would be controlled by unconscious patterns. The "o" symbolizes the balance between the karma of god and the person concerned. The jnana mudra (wisdom mudra) would reveal the deity and the ahamkara mudra (the ego-transcending gesture) the individuality, while in this mudra they come together and only life manifests. By constantly making the ohm mudra, one would become more peaceful, less aggressive and more self-sufficient.
