Forging is one of the oldest metalworking methods. A piece of metal is heated in a fire and then shaped with a blacksmith's hammer using an anvil. Objects that are forged are significantly stronger than objects of similar shape that are cast. This is because the crystal structure in a cast object is random, while the microcrystals are oriented by the forging in the direction the object is hammered. Metal forging was mainly used in the past to make metals stiffer. Metals consist of small crystals at the meso level. When iron is bent, these crystals slide past each other, which creates a lot of resistance. By repeatedly striking the metal with a hammer, the crystals break up into smaller crystals. As a result, all crystals together have a larger surface area and the crystals therefore also have a greater resistance when sliding. The crystals slide past each other less well when the metal is deformed and the result is that the metal has become stiffer.
