A tassel is a form of decoration consisting of a button to which loose threads of textile, leather or similar material are attached, which are knotted and/or hang down. Sometimes they are intended to set a mechanism in motion, such as curtain cords. Tassels can also decorate clothing, including hats, boots, and cloaks. In Flanders the name 'floss' or 'floche' is also used. In the West, tassels were originally a series of wraps of wire or rope around a hanging string until the desired curvature was achieved. Later turned wooden molds were used, which were either covered with simple casings or much more elaborate coverings called satins. This involved an intricate bonding of filament side bands vertically around the mold by means of an internal "lace" in the bore of the mold. During the Middle Ages, tassels were widely used in Spain as a decoration for horses, called borla from the Latin term burrula meaning "wool of little value". These constructions were varied and supplemented with elaborate decorations, each assigned an idiosyncratic term by their French makers. In sixteenth-century France, these individuals were called passementiers, and an apprenticeship of seven years was required to master one of the subdivisions of the guild. The French exported their highly artistic work on a large scale, and at such low prices that no other European country developed a mature 'garnish' industry. However, many of the passementiers were Protestant Huguenots who fled France in the 17th century to escape persecution, taking their tools and skills with them. Tassels and their associated shapes changed their style over the years, from the small and casual Renaissance designs (see example), through the medium and more sedate designs of the Empire period to the Victorian era with the largest and most elaborate decorative blooms. Some of these designs come back today from the European and American artisans, who charge perhaps a thousand dollars for a single handmade tassel. However, most of the world's tassel production takes place in China, which mass-produces them and exports them worldwide.
