The mineral howlite is a calcium-boron-silicate hydroxide, with the chemical formula Ca 2 B 5 SiO 9 (OH) 5. Howlite crystals are white and usually black. They have a monoclinic structure. Howlite usually occurs in nodular units (solid minerals with a surface area). The mineral is neither magnetic nor radioactive. Howliet is named after the Canadian chemist, geologist and mineraloog Henry How, who discovered the mineral in Brookville on Nova Scotia (Canada) in 1868. Howliet is often used to decorate jewelry. Because of the porous structure, it is widely colored to imitate other minerals. This is mainly done to imitate the much more expensive turquoise. It is then referred to as the name of turquenite.
