The Olmecs were the earliest known major civilization in Mexico following a progressive development in Soconusco. They lived in the tropical lowlands of south-central Mexico, in the present-day states of Veracruz and Tabasco. It has been speculated that Olmec derive in part from neighboring Mokaya or Mixe–Zoque. The population of the Olmecs flourished during Mesoamerica's formative period, dating roughly from as early as 1500 BCE to about 400 BCE. Pre-Olmec cultures had flourished in the area since about 2500 BCE, but by 1600–1500 BCE, early Olmec culture had emerged, centered on the San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán site near the coast in southeast Veracruz. They were the first Mesoamerican civilization, and laid many of the foundations for the civilizations that followed. Among other "firsts", the Olmec appeared to practice ritual bloodletting and played the Mesoamerican ballgame, hallmarks of nearly all subsequent Mesoamerican societies. The aspect of the Olmecs most familiar now is their artwork, particularly the aptly named "colossal heads". The Olmec civilization was first defined through artifacts which collectors purchased on the pre-Columbian art market in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Olmec artworks are considered among ancient America's most striking

The Maya (Maya Yucateeks: maaya'ob, Spanish: mayas) are a people of southern Mexico and northern Central America. The term is used as an umbrella term for 29 indigenous people from the same region, which hebben.Er same cultural and linguistic background are 8 to 9 million Mayans, the vast majority living in Guatemala and southern Mexico (Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Campeche , Chiapas and Tabasco), with smaller communities in Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. In deVerenigde States and northern Mexico are relatively large emigrant communities. Many Mayans are struggling with the problem that they want to take advantage of the good aspects of the modern world, while in the meantime do not want to lose their own identity on the one hand. During the twentieth century, the Mayas was not only a victim of neglect and disenfranchisement, but also of persecution and mass murder. More than eighty percent of the 200,000 victims of the Guatemalan civil war (1960-1996) consisted of Maya. In the eighties, under presidents Romeo Lucas García and Efraín Ríos Montt, Guatemala took an outright genocide against the Maya population place. The Roman Catholic Church of Guatemala has often heinous crimes documented in detail, a bishop of the diocese, Juan Gerardi killed. Someone who Mayan side campaigning against persisting impunity is Rigoberta Menchú (Nobel Peace Prize, 1992). Under international pressure in recent years, moreover, granted more rights to the sizeable Mayan population share. Especially bilingual education is internationally well praised. In Mexico flared tensions in 1994 when the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in Chiapas rebelled. Since the seventies, many Mayas converted to Protestantism. Among the Mayas in Guatemala and Chiapas, there are now more Protestants than Catholics. Especially evangelical Christianity and Pentecostal churches are popular. This change is not undisputed. At the time of the 'violence' (the 'violencia') was indeed the work of North American Protestant missionaries promoted by a murderous Guatemalan government, while progressive Catholic priests were properly prosecuted. Many old (community) traditions are under the influence of the anti-ritualistic Protestantism disappear, although this has the advantage that Protestant Maya no longer required to fulfill the often expensive community obligations and thereby achieve economic development in the Western sense.
