Different Native American cultures existed in Ecuador long before the Incas settled in the area in the 15th century. Most of them lived on the coast and in the highlands. The main tribes were the expansionist Caracas on the coast, and the more peaceful Quitus in the highlands. The Caracas, led by their chieftain Shyri, eventually seized control of the Quitus. Together they continued as the tribe of the Shyris. The Incas settled in Ecuador in the 15th century. The heart of the Inca Empire was in Cuzco, from where it expanded to northwest Argentina, northern Chile and southern Ecuador. In 1529, the Inca leader Huayna Capac died. Contrary to usual, he did not leave his empire to one of his sons, but to two: Huascar got the south, which had Cuzco as its center. And Atahualpa got the north with the current Quito as the center. In the end Atahualpa managed to capture Huascar. Atahualpa took up residence in Cajamarca (in present-day Peru), surrounded by a huge army. The Andes runs through the center of the country from north to south. In the high mountains are the capital Quito and the third city Cuenca, at an altitude of 2,500 meters. The climate is mild there. There are also some volcanoes in the mountains that reach a height of 5,000 to 6,000 meters. A number of them are still active. The Amazon rainforest is located in the east of the country. The climate is tropical: warm and humid. The many rivers in this area are all branches of the Amazon. The Galapagos Islands are considered the fourth zone of Ecuador. Unique flora and fauna have developed on these islands.
