Recently in our range Green Tree incense, an incense made on a small scale in Bangelore that is still completely made by hand. This incense has been made absolutely child labor free and consists of a number of wonderful scents, moreover everything is packaged in very nice sales displays. Frankincense is a mixture of aromatic organic substances, which can be ignited and then give off a fragrance judged to be pleasant. Frankincense also refers to the resin (olibanum) of the frankincense tree (Boswellia). The original meaning of the word frankincense is "wijrook" (smoke to consecrate). Frankincense has been used since at least 1700 BC, probably originally as an incense offering. The purpose of an incense offering was to appease the gods. The fragrance and the prayer rise with the smoke. A practical use of incense was to expel putrefactive air. The blood and remains of the animals sacrificed by Jews were masked with the pungent smell of frankincense. Frankincense was and is mainly used in churches in Europe. Although the smell of the sacrifices still had to be expelled from the Jews, incense could cover up the smell of the wealthy who were buried in the church. The expression rich stinker may have originated here. Even during funerals and pilgrimage sites where people have had to come from far, the use of the odor-busting incense does not seem to be a coincidence. The resins and oils were unaffordable for ordinary people, because they had to be imported from outside Europe. Apart from that, there was no culture of using frankincense outside the church. Since the 1960s, interest in Eastern cultures and religion has grown. Frankincense is widely used in many countries such as China, India, Tibet and Japan. In these countries, frankincense is just as common as in the western world flowers in the house or the use of soap or perfume. With the interest, the import and use of oriental incense also grew.
