The mineral celestine or celestine or coelestine is a strontium sulfate and has the chemical formula SrSO4. Celestine occurs both as separate crystals and in compact, massive and fibrous forms. The hardness is 3 and the average density is 3.95. It's not radioactive. The mineral is named after the Latin word caestinus, meaning "heavenly". It is mainly found in sedimentary rocks, and in evaporites co-occurring with the minerals gypsum, anhydrite and halite. The mineral is found all over the world, usually in small amounts. Faint blue crystals are found in the Sakoany Mine, Vallée de la Sofia, Mahajanga Province in Madagascar. In the Netherlands, celestite occurs in the quarries around Winterswijk.
