Machu Picchu (Quechua Machu Pikchu) is a ruined city of the Incas in Peru. This mountaintop city in the Andes was built in the 15th century and was probably intended as a country retreat for the king and other nobles. It was abandoned in the 16th century and rediscovered in 1866. Much of the Inca civilization can still be found in the ruins. The village of Aguas Calientes, located by the river at the foot of Machu Picchu, is only accessible by train. The village is not connected to the national road network. Tour buses from Cusco therefore do not travel further than Ollantaytambo, where you must change to the train. For locals there is an early and late train that is not open to tourists. The isolated location of Machu Picchu meant that in January 2010, almost two thousand tourists were unable to leave the area for several days after part of the railway line was blocked by heavy rain. Buses to Machu Picchu often run from Aguas Calientes. The 350 meter climb through the tropical rainforest can be made on foot. Aguas Calientes is a village completely focused on tourism, restaurants and lodges. The village has hot springs. The village is located in a tropical climate zone and there are tropical plants and animals to see. Due to the deep location in the valley, little sunlight penetrates
