Description
Fire agate is a translucent quartz. Its chemical structure is identical to jasper, flint, and chert. The orange/reddish-brown/green/blue stones are polished and used in jewelry. The main sources of fire agate are India, Mexico, the Czech Republic, Morocco, Iceland, Brazil, and the United States. According to superstition, it protects against curses. Fire agate is attributed with several medicinal properties, such as its effectiveness against stomach complaints and circulatory problems. The stone energizes, stimulates sexual activity, and helps overcome addictions. Physically, the stone has a beneficial effect on the stomach, nervous system, hormonal system, circulatory system, and eyes. Agate is a transparent, but sometimes opaque, variety of quartz and a subvariety of chalcedony. Its chemical structure is identical to jasper, flint, and chert, and it is often found with opal. The colorful, striped specimens are used as semiprecious stones. The name agate comes from the Greek Ἀχάτης, Achatès, the name of the present-day Dirillo River in southern Sicily, where agates and other chalcedony were found.
