Although we purchased the material as Smithsonite, research by Dutch but also American researchers shows that it is Garnierite, among other things due to the presence of nickel.

Garnierite is a common name for a green nickel ore found in pockets and veins in weathered and convoluted ultramafic rocks. It forms by lateritic weathering of ultramafic rocks and occurs in many nickel laterite deposits in the world. The presence of rock fragments appears to be of the Gabbro rock type. Found in Laterite weathered soil clusters with strong evidence that they both contain residual weathering products or weathering remains of the Cretaceous Ultra Base/Ophiolite source rock / approximately 63 -138 million years old and are also highly nickel-bearing. These rock formations are widely visible in the Kendari and Morowali districts of Indonesia.
