Hand-polished Mookaite disc from Morocco.
It was Timmergems in 1979 who was the first in the Netherlands to import Mookaiet “from Mooka station” from Australia, and it still has the largest Mookaiet in Europe! The Moroccans have their own Mookaiet, beautiful drawing, but the color spectrum of the Australian is more beautiful. In contrast, the price of the Moroccan is a lot lower.
Mookaite belongs to the Jasper family and therefore to the Quartz group and has a hardness of 7. Mookaite is found in China and Western Australia. Jasper is an opaque and finely crystalline variety of quartz. The chemical composition is identical to that of agate, flint and chert. The colors are variable, from yellow through red and red-brown to green. Jasper stones are cut and polished to be set in jewelry. The name jasper is derived from a Semitic language via Latin and Greek (íaspis) and means "spotted or speckled stone". Jasper has been used as a gemstone since ancient times. For example, they were used to make seal stones, small carved stones and galantries. Jasper was attributed with magical powers. In ancient times it was called the mother of all stones. It is used today in cabochons, tabletop cuttings and arts and crafts objects. Imitations are made of glass. The Egyptians and Greeks already used jasper to enhance sexuality and to achieve early pregnancy. For the Indians, yellow jasper worked as a rain stone. A number of medicinal properties are attributed to jasper, such as stress reduction, weight loss, combating stomach complaints and solving liver problems. According to various literary sources, Jasper belongs to the constellations Aries, Virgo, Cancer and Scorpio. In the Christian scripture Revelation 4:2-3 it is written: At that moment I was moved. There was a throne in heaven and someone sat on it. The one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and sardre, and around the throne was a rainbow like an emerald.
