When you think of Christmas, one of the first things that comes to mind is the Christmas tree. Did you know that more than 90% of the Netherlands has a Christmas tree at Christmas? But where does the Christmas tree actually come from and how did the tradition of a decorated tree in the house at Christmas come about? The tradition of the Christmas tree started in the time of the Germans during the pagan winter festivals. A green tree was placed here, which was a symbol of renewal and fertility. They chose the pine tree because it remained green all year round. The fir tree heralded the new spring, and when stars and moons were used for decoration, it was as a symbol of divinity.
