The Thinker (Le Penseur) is a bronze sculpture by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. It represents the creative mind at work. The image is often associated with philosophy because of the posture of the man, who is deep in thought. Rodin made this famous creation in 1881. It was in that year that Rodin received his first official Parisian order: a monumental bronze gate for a future Museum of Decorative Arts. This Porte de l'Enfer (Gate of Hell) was conceived after Dante's Divina Commedia. The bronze statue was intended for the central pediment, while the accentuated musculature and concentrated expression of the statue evoked Michelangelo's funerary figures in the Florentine Basilica of St. Lawrence. The statue is also called Le Poète, because it was supposed to represent the meditating Dante. The Thinker was Rodin's first work to be exhibited in a public place. It was erected in front of the Pantheon on April 21, 1906 during a violent political and social crisis, turning the statue into a socialist symbol. In 1922, the statue and its pedestal were transferred to the garden of Hôtel Biron, the current Rodin Museum. Another example is in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen. Others can be found at Rodin's tomb in Meudon and in front of the main entrance of the Detroit Institute of Arts.
