Driftwood is wood that has been washed up on the beach or a riverbank by wind, waves and the tide. In some cases, but not always, it is a form of marine debris. Driftwood is abundant in some areas. While driftwood is still floating in water, many fish and other marine animals use driftwood as a shelter and food source. Eel worms and bacteria break down the wood and convert it into nutrients that are returned to the food chain. Driftwood washed ashore can be used as shelter by birds and plants. Driftwood can also form the foundation for dunes. Driftwood can sometimes cause significant damage if fast ferries accidentally hit a floating stump or a sleeper. That is why driftwood in the Thames is actively collected and disposed of. According to Norse mythology, the first humans, Ask and Embla, were created from driftwood by the god Odin. Driftwood carried by the rivers and ocean currents in the Arctic was the primary, and sometimes the sole, source of wood for the Inuit and other peoples of this area until they came into contact with Europeans. Driftwood is often used today for decorative furniture or artwork. It is also popular as part of aquariums.
