The dinosaurs or dinosaurs — the first name is the English translation of Dinosauria, the scientific name of the group — are a diverse group of reptiles belonging to the Archosauria, which date back to the Mesozoic Era. Today, the birds are known to be dinosaurs. The Dinosauria arose about 230 million years ago in the Triassic period, as a split off from the larger group of the Dinosauriformes. The first dinosaur was a small bipedal carnivore. It was the direct ancestor of the two main groups into which all other dinosaurs can be divided: the Saurischia (including the birds) and the Ornithischia. Plant-eating species soon developed in both groups. The dinosaurs became dominant towards the end of the Triassic, when most other large animals on land became extinct. During the following Jurassic and Cretaceous, the dinosaurs were the dominant land animals for 140 million years, the largest that ever lived. Thousands of species, carnivores and herbivores, developed in all kinds of forms, partly due to the moving apart of the continents. However, the marine reptiles of that time and the pterosaurs, flying reptiles, were not dinosaurs. At the end of the Cretaceous, 66 million years ago, most dinosaurs became extinct, perhaps as a result of a meteorite impact. However, some dinosaurs survived, namely the group of the birds. Since 1808, the extinct dinosaurs have been scientifically described and Richard Owen gave the group its name in 1842, which means "fortunate saurians". Many dinosaur fossils were discovered between 1870 and 1925, especially in North America. After that, interest declined sharply, but since 1968 there has been a significant revival of research, the dinosaur renaissance. Hundreds of new species have been found in China and Argentina in particular. Much improved insights have been gained about their relationships, build and way of life. Earlier popular science books on the subject have become completely obsolete as a result.
