The mineral crocoite is a lead-chromate with the chemical formula PbCrO4. The translucent yellow, orange or red; typical saffron-colored crocoiet a diamond brilliance, a yellow-orange stripe color and the mineral has a clear cleavage according to the crystal surface [110] and an unclear according to [100] and [001]. The crystal system is monoclinic. Crocoiet has an average density of 6, the hardness is 2.5 to 3, and the mineral is not radioactive. The name of the mineral crocoiet krokos is derived from the Greek, meaning "crocus" or "saffron". It is so named for its distinctive color. Crocoiet is a secondary mineral in lead-oxidized ores. The type of location crocoiet the Adelaide mine, Dundas, Tasmania. The mineral is also found among others in Kalleberg, Glauchau, Sachsen, Germany and Berezovsk in the Ural Mountains in Russia.
