Heliotrope is a mineral and a variety of quartz, more specifically a variant of chalcedone. Heliotrope is a two-tone nesosilicate. The base color is dark green, with red points on it. The name heliotrope is derived from the Greek helios, which means sun and trepein, "spin". The classic source of heliotrope is the Kathiawar Peninsula in northwest India.
