Maria (from Greek Μαρία), Miriam (Hebrew מרים) and Maryam (Arabic مريم) in the New Testament and the Koran the mother of Jesus. The origin of the name is probably Egyptian: Meriam, Meri-Amon (which means "Beloved of Amon -the divine"). According to Christian tradition, she is the daughter of Joachim and Anna; mentions in the Qur'an of Imran as her father. For Catholics, it is the most important saint. In the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church Mary is Mother of God an important role in religious life. In the Orthodox Church is the common expression for Mary Mother of God, not Mary. There is within the theology even a complete discipline that focuses specifically on her: Mariology. Several liturgical celebrations and feasts are celebrated in her honor.
