Alexandrite is named after the Russian Tsar Alexander II and is a variety of chrysoberyl. Alexandrite was discovered in 1832 in the Urals. It is the most prized variety of chrysoberyl and has always been surrounded with sage, daytime alexandrite looks like emerald and night like a ruby or amethyst. This phenomenon is called the alexandrite effect. The stone was a symbol of life and positive changes. The main deposits are located since 1832 in the river valley of the Tokowaya in the Urals in Russia. For a long time this was the only site of alexandrite. Crystals have been found with a size of 4 cm. The Fersman Museum in Moscow is a group alexandrietkristallen (Kotschubej) of 5.38 kg and with a size of 25 x 15 cm.
