A link consists of a closed loop. Links often consist of rings, but can also have other shapes. Also, by bending, welding, soldering or otherwise shaping one initial loop, multiple loops can arise from this initial loop. The most basic link chain consists of connections in which one link is connected to one or more links, but also where a double or more links are connected with two or more links. The oldest finds of link chains in royal tombs near Oer date from 3000 BC. Due to the quality of the recovered chains, it is suspected that link chains were also produced before this time. Because it is known that trade contacts existed in the early Bronze Age, it is not possible to say with certainty where the classic link chain originated. From 2000 BC. examples have been found of link chains constructed in different ways. In the 7th century BC. a new technique was used in Greece in which several rows of rings were linked together to form a ribbon, similar to the technique used for making chainmail. This method was widely used by the Etruscans, Ancient Greeks and Romans.
